D'Artagnan, the king's musketeer
A little piece of history of Maastricht in Southern Limburg (The Netherlands) not many people know of.
Who is not familiar with the famous musketeer d'Artagnan, the hero in the stories by Alexandre Dumas. Relatively few people know this musketeer really did exist. And probably even less people know that d'Artagnan, born in the Gascogne in 1611, died in Maastricht on June 25, 1673 during a siege by the French. Near the Tongerse Plein in Maastricht you can find a little statue of this famous musketeer.
Have you seen the movie "The Man In The Iron Mask" with Leonardo DiCaprio? Historically not very accurate, was it?!
